Chuck chickens!

When you get excited about having a clean serviette because it is Sunday surelythat must it be telling you something!

When you worry that the chickens might feel too hot, what does that say about you?

If you rush to the car to find a bath size towel to create shade for these creatures, has your concern for their well-being begun to worry you too much?

When once you have cornered off a shady covering and sprayed the towel and created a wet area  and placed a bowl of water nearby so that the chickens could possibly paddle their feet, should you consider consulting a therapist?

Were you to Google chicken songs with the intention of singing them to the chickens. have you become obsessed with their welfare?

If you feel strongly that the chicken timetable:

7:30 open their hut, feed and water them

4pm Give them more food and search to see if they have laid any eggs.

    9:30  Put them to bed

must be strictly adhered to,  have these chickens taken over your life?

Having observed these chickens and noticing that each ones plumage is different in appearance can lead to re- naming each one. The one that has feathers that fan out in many directions, cockle-doodle-does loudly and struts forward unevenly obviously is Boris. Pretti is the one that moves her head from side to side and looks as though she’s permanently smiling. Corbyn’s head revolves in all directions, is rarely on his perch and pads around the bottom of the  cage. Nigel is perpetually trying to wing his escape just as soon as the latch has been pulled open.

On noticing the chickens seeming desire to peck the green grass outside their confines we considered the reason for their urges. When they began to press their beaks closer to the fence and roll their beady eyes were they pleading to be let free? That of course would not be possible. We concluded that maybe their natural instincts were crying out to be satisfied with some kind of green vegetable. Then we recalled the lady of the house recommending kale. This led to research on Google with the following result:

Kale is high in fibre and water. Both of these help prevent constipation and promote regularity and a healthy digestive tract. It also contains B vitamins, and vitamin C, which promotes iron absorption. These are essential for the release of energy from food.

Although the bit about preventing constipation is slightly concerning…(you won’t want me to be too explicit) the benefits seem to have resulted in their producing at least three eggs a day! Whoopee!

Feeling that we could benefit from sanctuary in the nearby church of St Mary the Virgin, Reculver Lane for their Sunday Communion Service we were surprised that the vicar referred to chickens in her sermon. In fact, she mentioned that the Palestinians would often take their animals, including the their fowl, inside their home at night. Now we are not considering going that far but we did rush in to check on them when we returned from our visit to Reculver. I confess that we do talk to them. Not always to each one but to address all four of them. Their little eyes are so appealing. So we gave them some kale. Four pieces. One piece each but, would you believe it, they left two pieces to one side and argued over the other pieces. I did call out, Look over there! There are four pieces..to know avail! Is my assessment of their understanding too high? Or am I losing my grip?
